The MOBILE software system enables instructors to easily create distibutable portable operating systems.
Rather than caring that everybody has the same software setup and are up to date on current files, our system allows instructors to replicate one full setup to flash drives, and whenever an instructor needs to make sure everybody is on the same page, they can synchronize the current session's files to all participants.
We currently have two methods of setting up the MOBILE software system. The first is listed immediately below and the second follows.
Method 1
The first method of setting up our system allows an instructor to run an unattended installation that will set up our MOBILE software on Ubuntu.
Directions
This has to be burned to a cd drive, as using a program that will enable a bootable flash drive does not allow alternate installations.
For installation: Put the cd in a spare laptop / computer and boot from the CD.
Note: This process will wipe out your hard drive, so make sure you use a laptop or computer that contains nothing you care about
As the installer menu loads, hit Esc twice to get to the BOOT: prompt, then enter:
install auto=true priority=critical url=http://mobilemd.cs.uwec.edu/mobile.seed
and then proceed to boot. There will be 2 prompts to choose a language and country, but the rest of the install should proceed unattended.
The computer must stay connected to the internet via an ethernet connection during the install process
Congragulations! Finish setting up all software and files you want students or participants to use, clone the system to flash drives using our MOBILE Presenter application, and you're good to go!
Method 2
The second method of setting up our system does not do an automated installation of an operating system, but does do an automated setup of the software environment. We do this by providing you a simple shell script to run the first time you boot your operating system.
Note: Our system assumes a debian based operating system. Not everything will work unless a debian based operating system is used.
Directions
Download and install a debian based operating system on a spare laptop.
If any script in the table below is of use to you, download it,
chmod +x
it and
sudo ./
run it.
If nothing pertains to you, download and run our default script. If possible, modify the script and email it back to us and we'll add it to the
table below.
